I don't know your application but if its a popular vehicle and common problem then maybe a business online has a cheap fix. For example, I had the same problem as yours on a mid/late 90's mustang. I found a couple companies that sold the little plastic drive gear online and it wasn't a very difficult fix, I think the gear was around $10 shipped.
