It depends it depends it depends. In most states a homeowner may remove up to a limited amount of ACBM Asbestos Containing Building Material. You could check with your local environmental control agency. You can send a small chunk to a laboratory and get it tested, and find out for sure what it is, ACBM or non-ACBM. Even if it is, it may not be "friable" UNLESS and until you crumble it or crush it. But it depends on your local state regulations. Easy to check and find out for sure. I would not cut it, break it, damage it, until you find out. In any event, go to your farm and home and get a respirator designed for asbestos, only $30 or $40 or so, you'll be glad you did.
