rgthompson, the problem is in the starter switch, or a loose/corroded cable connection at the switch.
Where ever you find heat, or see smoke, 99% chance that is where the problem is. High resistance=heat. If the current can't get to where it is supposed to go (the starter) it ends up as heat at the poor connection (the switch).
Check your cables and connections at the switch. Look at the contacts, clean them if possible, replace the switch if needed.
Upload one or more videos to your post. Photo filesizes should be less than 300K and Videos, less than 2MB. Formats allowed are gif, jpg, png, ogg, mp4, mov, and avi. Be sure to use filenames without spaces or special characters, and filetypes of 3 digits lower case.
