While limited in use for some products asbestos has not been banned in the USA. The USA feels the use of asbestos outweighs the dangers of asbestos for some products.
The Chinese drywall is much worse. While you have to mess with the product to release asbestos the Chinese drywall emits a gas that corrodes copper. IE: water pipes and electrical wiring. High humidity hampers the problem. Due to a shortage of American drywall caused by a housing boom and several hurricanes during the 2000's Chinese drywall was imported; mostle to the southeast states. Florida took the worse of the hit.
