: I have a 1948 AC G with a 6 volt system and it isn't very efficient.I know a guy that just puts 12 volt batteries in his 6 volt tractors.I thought that you had to convert 6 to 12 volts by rewiring the electrical system.Would appreciate any information on this.

There is NOTHING wrong with a 6 volt system if its cared for. You need to clean all battery post connections and all starting circuit connections. The battery posts and the insides of the connectors need to shine before you connect them. The battery can't be 100 years old, needs to be cared for in the water department. I read that the G may not use a regulator but the light switch controls the amount of generation. Pull it all the way for maximum generation, but watch for the battery venting when its over charged. Always use distilled, not tap water, for replacing the water that's lost from over charging. Make sure the battery cables are large, because 6 volt starters take twice the current of 12 volt starters (though the engine of the G should spin with a cat whisker for power!) The connections to the ends of battery cables have been known to corrode and loose connections where you can't get at them to clean. New large diameter battery cables may be in order.

Battery post connections may be protected to some extent with an application of grease or a spray paint made for the purpose. Modern batteries tend to fume around the posts and the grease or spray tend to not protect there. I've had those fumes eat a connector completely.

This article will focus on what I encountered and what I did to bring the 1951 NEAR DEATH Farmall H back to life. ... [Read Article]
