That connector goes to the mass air flow sensor. While the engine may start without it, and may even run for a while, it will not run well or for long without it. That is the main mixture control sensor. If the engine runs at all without it, it is only in a "limp" mode. Just my opinion, but I think those K&N filters are a waste of time and money. The improvement that they will make in airflow is more than offset by the computer programming in the PCM.
