: : What is the difference between a live PTO and others. : : I just read the 8n discussion and it was said that : : the 8n didn't have live PTO. Well, I have an 8n : : and we use the PTO all of the time. It isn't dead. : : I'm not new to tractors, but I've never had this : : explained to me. Come to think of it, my 1937 JD : : AR has a PTO that we use to run an auger.Explain : Live PTO refers to the way the PTO is engaged, if you will. The purpose is to be able to disengage the ground drive without disengaging the PTO drive. Different manufacturers did it in different ways. In Fords later years, they began using a two stage clutch pedal; push half way, tractor stops and PTO (if lever is engaged) keeps running...push the clutch pedal full to the foot board and the tractor AND PTO disengage. Others (Oliver, Farmall, etc...) accomplished this with a seperate clutch on the PTO (usually a handle coming from the PTO clutch housing signaled this). If you brush hog, bale, use a spread, etc... without live power you tend to get a 'push' from the implement when you first push in the clutch and everything stops. Also a pain if picking corn, spreading, and such when the implement stops and you don't want it to. I guess the worst is brush hogging and getting push into a tree or over a bank because your brake are a bit weak...been there, no fun. A true live PTO, simply means it's power train is constantly connected to the engine, and has it's own independant clutch to engage or disengage the tractors Power Take Off shaft at any time the engine is running. The PTO clutch has a seperate lever, switch, etc. to control the PTO. A tractor with a two stage clutch, one stage to control the PTO is not a true live PTO. Also PTO's driven by the main power train, at rpm's in a ratio to ground speed, are not true live PTO's. If the master clutch can stop the PTO at any time it is not a live PTO. Think of "live PTO" as "independent PTO", and like all living it still needs it's source of energy to be. Milan
