I assume that the 600-900 and 601-901 clearances are the same, but I don't really know. My 871 has just enough room to roll the valve cover out with the tank in place. What I found helps a lot is to remove the two studs that the valve cover nuts go on, use threadlocker on the nuts, and just unscrew both the stud and nut when removing the cover. And yes, a person can change the gas shutoff valve without removing the tank. I got pretty good at it when dealing with those lousy lever-type valves. :(
