We bought an Amana Dutch door bottom freezer with ice/water in the top door. Got it from a Whirlpool employee who won it at the company picnic, but could not fit it in their kitchen. About half price. Living in the area of the headquarters of the world's largest appliance manufacturer has it's benefits.
Have had one service call for a burned relay I could not find/diagnose on my own. Also replaced the water tank that supplies the door, required removal of the complete refrigerator compartment. And the main computer board. But, not sure it is any worse than any other. We have soured on most products from Whirlpool, unfortunately. We have enough friends employed there that we would like to support them, they are good community partners. But, quality is more important.
As to saving the old fridge, our electric utility is paying $30 and will haul it away for you if it still works...
