To John T's comment about "answering the question not asked," in a lot of cases there are other factors to consider besides a simple yes/no response. For example, a simple yes/no question such as "Should I yank on this rope?" The person asking this question wants a simple yes/no answer, but wouldn't it be prudent for us to ask, "WHAT IS ON THE END OF THE ROPE?" or make comments about the potential pitfalls of pulling on a rope when you don't know what's connected to it? It doesn't answer the question but it could save the person asking the question from some future headaches, both literal and figurative.
