Milk contains about the same amount of sugar as soft drink. The sugar is called lactose. Lactose molecule is made up of two simple sugar molecules with an ionic bond. People who can digest milk have an natural enzyme that breaks the ionic bond into glucose and galactose. When you buy lactose free milk it has simply been treated with a synthetic version of the enzyme to pre break the lactose molecule into glucose and galactose. Lactose free milk has a sweeter taste because we sense the simple sugars more than lactose. The sugar content and calories are the same in natural or lactose free. People who can't drink milk lack the enzyme and the lactose molecule doesn't digest correctly and makes methane gas in your intestines. As people age the they tend to make less and less of the enzyme and become more sensitive to dairy.
