2/1/43 The first group of haggard, starving Japanese defenders are evacuated from Guadalcanal. By Feb 8th all remaining Japanese troops will be gone - snuck out at night under the noses of the Americans. Thus ends 7 months of bitter ground, air and sea battles for that island at the extreme end of both belligerent's logistical chains. The Japanese public is not told that this evacuation was a defeat. Instead they are told it is but a regrouping for attacks in a different direction. The losses suffered by both sides were tremendous but the Americans are able to replace their ships, planes and men while the Japanese simply can not. The turning point in the war has been reached. From this point onward the Americans never stop advancing while the Japanese never stop retreating.
