Sorry, the second part of you question on correcting the problem. You need to verify all components of the ignition system, especially the secondary side ( plugs, wires, cap, rotor) are all good. Points need to be good and set right too. If weak spark is noted at the plug or plug wire then move to the coil wire and then coil, if still weak spark then try another coil. Make sure wiring to coil is good though, proper voltage on + side and trigger/ground circuit from --coil side to points/dist too.
