Different companies use different criteria for a total but most are in this ball park. About 80% is the magic number. If damages and the value of the vehicle to a scrap yard combined reach 80% of the value it's a total. So a vehicle that the book says is worth 10 dollars has damages worth 4 dollars ( that the company would have to pay) and a scrapper will pay 4 dollars it's a total. Damages don't have to equal or exceed the value of the vehicle.
AS far as the airbags are concerned. Each company has it's own policies on that. Most will only pay for new airbags. Plus if they insist on replacing them and in a subsequent accident they fail they can be held liable by the courts. That is why some companies automatically total a vehicle that's airbags have deployed.
