In fairness to Grassley, he farmed in Iowa many years ago, and I think a son still runs the family farm. But he has been out of hands-on farming for decades. (I used to chat with him once in a while when he was a U.S. rep and then a senator; he would stop in to do some schmoozing at the Waterloo Courier, where I was the front-page editor for many years. He would spend time with middle and upper management in the newsroom to keep the press on his side. He seemed like a decent if somewhat goofy guy. A real "aw, shucks" stereotype of an Iowa farmer. And I say that in a nice way as someone who grew up on an Iowa farm and still owns farmland there in absentia.)
