Tex Bubba and Billy Bob can wire their house and it too has to pass the building inspector. Permit costs $100. Bubba and Billy BOB can't wire someone's elses house unless the owner gets a permit, claims he doing the work. The work still has to pass inspection.
I've upgraded 12 electrical services and re wired all many of my rental places. I was able to do my own work and they all passed inspection. My last room addition, I hired a union electrician to do the work. Inspector red flagged the wire going to the bedroom smoke detector. Inspector wanted it wired with 12-3 with ground. The third wire was to connect the smoke detector to other smoke detectors. Only problem this was the only hard wired smoke detector in the house. Old part of house have battery powered detectors.
