In my John Deere manual it states that the number 1 stamped rod should be on the left side of the tractor. And the number 2 rod should be on the right side of the tractor. I assume the right side is as you are sitting on the tractor? The only reason I ask is when I went to remove the rods, the number 2 rod is on the left side of the tractor as you sit on it. The number 1 rod is on the right side as you sit on the tractor. Does it really matter which side 1 and 2 rods are on? How clean do the journal need to be to run the old tractors? Mine look a little rough appearance wise. I emery clothed the journals and they are smooth. There is visual marks or lines (not straight lines) in the journal but I cannot feel anything. Please advise of your thoughts? Thanks
