Jon I would run for a Volvo that is out of warranty!!!! Engine issues are known to be bad news.
As for a new truck I would go with as simple as I could buy and that would not be an automatic. With the higher horsepower trucks these days you not shifting much anyway. Plus I hate backing into a dock that is up hill with an automatic. You get jumps and starts. It is hard to not slam the dock.
I will second skipping the Paccar engine. Several locals have had nothing but trouble out of them. The one fellow says he loves his when it is running but he will never own it out of warranty.
