I bought a new F350 diesel in May of 2001 and about a year later one of the batteries went bad. Ford warranted the battery but would only replace the bad one. I was always taught that it is not good to mix new and old batteries so I replaced the other good one with a new battery also. The battery I removed ended up in my Jeager air compressor and it finally gave up last year at 15 years old.
