The u-joint may be designed to run in lube. So that area maybe have lube in it on purpose. You should be able to see if there are seals between the u-joint cup and cross to seal the needle bearings. Sounds like you need the steering knuckle seal regardless. Might jack it up and check for king pin type play. Old IH Scouts used wet u-joints as did some early Ford 4x4 pickups(not certain on the Fords). Obviously way different than your application.
