I have encountered this problem, more than once. Usually involves the shifter linkage bushings falling out of the shift tower.
I repaired one a (6640 Ford) by gluing the bushings
in place, that worked but everything was made clean and new. The second time(a 6610 Ford) I removed the shift tower
support and took it to the machinist and had bronze bushings fitted. That tractor shifts better than new. I agree Ford transmission internal repairs are very expensive, although in my experience they are a very hardy transmission overall.
