About the quietest (old) diesels were the International D 239s in the 574 etc. They had crankshaft balancers or something I have 14 or 15 Diesel on the farm of 4 or 5 brands and by far the IH 684 and 574 and 664 are the smoothest , quietest, least offensive of them all. The 4-cylinder Mahindras are smooth and quiet but newer. I read where Navistar (International) and Mahindra share an engine plant somewhere. Some diesels have an offensive rattle noisy nature. 4-cly deeres and 3-cyl anything, for example.
