As long as it's the kids doing the taunting the grownups should stay out of. It's just a part of growing up. They may have practiced hard and done their best but that doesn't always equal success and kids need to learn this early so they can make better decisions as adults.
Simply practicing hard is like a friend of mine that started farming. No one worked harder, he got up early checked the cattle and headed to the fields and worked as long as it took. But for some reason he wasn't cut out for farming and wasn't successful. He took a lot of ribbing from his peers. Eventually he realized that he had better sell out before it bankrupted him. He went back to school and became a banker. Now guess who is on top and who is struggling.
If kids are allowed to be kids they will usually work things out. Grownups are usually the ones that screw it up.
