You are right, tractors have gotten quieter, and the muffler is just a small part of it. Just one example is the insulated side covers over the engine on most tractors that have been built in the last twenty years. As Tom OConnor pointed out a modern cab is a very big factor. As an example, I drive a dump truck occasionally for some friends. They recently got a new 2016 wheel loader. While a still modern, fifteen year old loader will really howl while pushing into the pile, you can't hear this new one running if you have the radio on.
