I had an uncle, born in 1902, who never married and stayed at home on the 70 acre "home place" making his living raising tobacco, milking a few cows and raising hay and corn for his cows.
He did this with a Farmall Regular bought new in 1927. The engine was converted to F-20 specs and a trip bucket loader, driven from a hydraulic pump mounted between the clutch and transmission was installed sometime over the years. The steel wheels were replaced with rubber tires when they paved the road past his house in the 1940s.
In the early/mid 1950s, he bought his "big tractor," a 1936 (I believe) F-30. The F-30 was on round spoked rubber all around and was the best F-30 user that I have ever seen. He could crank start either in the dead of winter with his eyes closed.
He used these tractors to make his living until the day he died in 1986.
