Wegman's started in Rochester, NY, and was for many years a local chain only. They've expanded considerably over the last few decades. 30 years ago, I had college roommates from Rochester who would make late-summer trips to Wegman's to stock up on groceries before coming to school, as many of the things they did there (bulk quantities, deeply-discounted store brands, huge-sized stores with wide selections, fresh, local, organic produce, etc. etc.) were quite novel concepts at the time. Now, of course, they're much more wide-spread, and many of the things they do are available at many other places, but if you've never been to one it's still an experience and worth the trip--they still manage to have a unique "flavor" from the more common superstores that helps explain their success in broadening their reach beyond NY.
