I never raised or liked turnips but my dad did. Before the first frost dad would dig a 4x4 hole about 18 inches deep. Then he'd line the bottom with grass clippings(on a sod farm you have a lot of those). The turnips with a 1-3 inch top left on got layed on the clippings and got covered with a pile of more clippings usually 2-3 feet tall. Dad would make "rabbit holes" in the bottom to reach in to get to them. Had them till February.
