Ah, but they ALREADY DO. That's why there are significant differences in how individual states allocate their electors, with Maine and Nebraska being outliers.
The constitution gives individual state legislatures considerable latitude in how they select electors. The current method of selecting electors via a statewide general election is codified in state, not federal law. State legislatures can change it.
Now of course court challenges are inevitable if this ever comes to pass. But it will be an uphill battle for plaintiffs to prove it's unconstitutional for state legislatures to change how they select their electors when the constitution explicitly gives them this right. Refer to Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution. The operative words are "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors...".
