Finding a good replacement engine would be difficult. They would more than likely be in the same shape as yours.

Another thing you need to consider is the engine balancer in the oil pan. The 3020 has a gear in the middle of the crankshaft that drives this balancer. IF the bearings are out of this balance it will make a knocking sound too. The bad news here is yours is a gas motor. The balancer gears for the gas motors are no longer available from JD. So I would check the hydraulic coupler and if they are not bad then I would drop the oil pan and check the balancer out. Do so before running it much longer. Most of the time if caught soon enough the balancer just needs bearing to be rebuilt.

Now as to the value of a JD 3020 GAS. The power shift makes it a little more marketable but not a lot. There where fewer made but still enough that they are not supper collectable. You have not told us the year of the tractor so here is two prices. An early model JD 3020 gas PS will be in the $4500-5500 range in good condition, no knocks. A late model one will be more in the $6500-7500 range. Now, good paint and newer tires will increase both values. Your tractor is a collector market tractor. It being a gas models is a major draw back to some one wanting to use it as a regular tractor.

So in summery: IF you just have a bad hydraulic couple issue than your good to go relatively economically. IF you have balancer problem then the cost will be higher. Rebuilding the balance can get costly if the housing has to be bored and bushing installed to repair the bearing seats. You can easily get into the $1500-2000 range if the balancer is in bad shape. IF it is just bearings your in the $200-300 range. The total value of the tractor will limit your ability to do major repairs and make any money. The difference in the value of a gas verses a diesel can easily be 50%. Even at the lower prices a gas model is usually not a hot seller either.
