easy now larry ,.. come to southern ind,.. and you will see all the marginal land we try to farm ,,.some don't even have 5 inches of top soil on the knolls ,,. yet the BTO guys doing their best raising 30 bu beans and paying 100 bux per acre rent,,. for the dear ol widows ,. that's better money than graxzin momma cows and ya don't have to keep fence and worry about hay supplies,,. or a cow falling in a sinkhole ,,. one of my farms has 6 sinkholes in the field area ,,. on the same farm I have another 85 acres in woods that has probably 3 times as may sinkholes,,.. I kid you not ,..my brother poppt thru a new hole on another farm with a fully loaded bin on his 1660 ,,. ruined the drive train axle, and wrekt the entire combine ,.. true there is good farmable ground in soutrhern ind ,,. but a lot should be used for raising cattle and like dad an granpa did ,, lot of hogs all over the hills and hollers , in answer to FARMALLS ? ,. I put waterways and seeded filter strips around my sinkholes 20 yrs ago andcsigned those waterways and postage stamp acres into Conservation treserve program for a whopping 78 bux per acre ,,. my country farmer pastor told me ,, ' Ya Know Jim , with the dry weather we keep havin ,, you cant make but 80 bu per acre in 2 out of 5 yrs on this hillside ground' ,.when I reupt the same land 5 yr ago they payed me 130 bux on waterways ,.. and 110 for hi ground wetland I planted to trees ,, I have 2 acres that is always wet , yet higher than any land aroud , VERY ODD??YOU mite say , but typical for this area,.. subsoiling helpt . but a fella needed to do that nearly every yr ,,. redclay is like modeling clay,, It would raise good wheat ,, but corn and beans were lousey ,. the trees are doing real good ,, inkhole areas they only offered 100 bux per acre THIS YEAR , and the honey locust are really liking it arund these sink holes ,.I took those areas out of crp and am planing to plant alfalfa for a few yrs to get shut of them durn mean ol locust seedlings,,,,. ,,. wquisht we coul get that kinda money for crp everyone wlse is getting ,,. a lot of this marginal land would not be farmed to death and eventually end up in trailers and modular homes and them finally become meth labs ,.. we could keep the garbage junkie trash billygoatpeople away from us God Fearing country folk
