The solenoid shuts off the fuel to the engine when you cut the ignition power. The purpose is to prevent hot start exhaust backfire, engine run on when shut off, and raw gas from being blown out the exhaust while te engine coasts down. You can overcome all this by always idling the engine down before shutting it off, and leaving it in gear to kill it with the clutch if it tries to run on.
There is probably a metal or neoprene tip on the plunger. You can cut it off, or pull the spring out so it won't shut off the fuel. Then you can screw it back in and leave it unplugged.
