It sounds like your out the money and the trees. The odds of you ever getting anything from him are slim. I would have NOT texted him demanding interest. I would have been glad to just get my money back. I have found it takes patience and honey to deal with these type of guys once they get behind with you. I am not saying he did not own you some interest but I know how these type of guys react. You have to smooze them or they just put you in the same class as all the other guys trying to badger them for money. He will not pay you another dime I bet. I also bet that he has zero assets to attach for you to get a judgment against. So your odds of collecting anything are low.
Next time hire an established business to do the work. You will maybe pay a little more but your odd of having trouble are much lower.
