I have a Briggs & Stratton 18.5 HP overhead valve single cylinder engine on my Huskee riding lawn mower. I have a similar problem, but apparently to a lesser extent than you do. If I leave the mower turned off for a day or two, a small amount of oil leaks from the valve cover onto the muffler. It burns off within a couple of minutes, but it certainly isn't right.
I think I have a pretty good idea of how to use Permatex, but I've had that cover off the engine multiple times and it always oozes a bit of oil when it sits. B&S doesn't list gasket, so for now, I'm just letting it ooze.
