Same problem with my cubs. Haven't found a shorter version. I cut small blocks of wood and placed them on top of the battery. The lid sits down on the wood giving me about 1/4" of space between the terminals and the lid. Since the lid/top has the sides that roll over the box itself you it still covers and looks as though it is in its proper place.
