Basically if they can prove that you caused damage they can sue. The problem here is that often the vehicle is damaged both going in and coming out. That means that with a half a$$ed lawyer you are going to have to prove you didn't cause any damage. Kinda hard to argue with a lawyer when he's got the owner or manager of a body shop, who happens to deal with the local wrecker operators often, saying that a significant amount of the damage was caused by and armature pulling the vehicle out with a farm tractor. Not because you caused the damage but because you deprived someone they know from making a living. Yes, that's worse case scenario but it can happen. And not being a "reliable repair expert" you are going to have to convince a judge or jury that it wasn't anything you did. Living in snow country on a state highway I get several knocks on the door each year with someone in the ditch. I'm pretty picky about who I'll tow out. Most often I invite em in, offer then coffee, tea or hot chocolate and call a wrecker.
