Many years ago, before the arrival of weed controlling chemicals, The soybeans could become really infested with weeds. The beans would ripen and be ready to harvest but the weeds would still be green and growing. The combine just simply could not handle those green weeds, so you waited for a hard frost to kill the weeds. Hopefully not too many of the beans would be lost.
