I would get it running before changing anything you don't

know for sure is needed.

Otherwise you may introduce more problems.

You say you have voltage to the coil.

Is that battery voltage with the points open? Should be.

What about when the points close?

Does the distributor side of the coil drop to zero? It should.

You can use the 6V battery as-is to power the ignition and

the 12V charger or a battery to roll the starter.

Just don't hook either 12V device to the battery.

And make dang sure it's in neutral before you do.

If you convert to 12V with an alternator, unless you have an

alternator specially made, you will need to convert to negative

ground and either add a resistor to the coil wire or change

the coil to a true 12V coil. Points, solenoid, starter are Ok as

they are to run on 12V negative ground.
