I left the Boonville tractor show [very nice, AC the featured tractor] and was headed for Rolla to visit oldest son. He has taught me to stay off the main highways, and wander, so I wandered across Missouri and went thru Cole Camp. I had no idea, but they were having their 100th City Fair. I haven't seen so much fun in a long time. The downtown was blocked off, and they had carnival rides arranged along all down the side streets, full of kids. Food, funnel cakes, etc. Bu the best part was the contests in the main street. Nail driving contest, arranged on saw horses on a wood beam in center of street. You got timed to sink 5 16's into 2x4's. Everybody tried, men, women, kids. [I did ..... ok.] Cross-cut saw competition, men, then women, then mixed couples, old folks, it was really funny. Sawing off a piece of 6" log. I was going to enter what I heard off the loudspeakers as the nail toss..... until I saw the first big ol farm boy pick up a bale of hay and sling it down the street, .... it was a BALE toss! He heaved it about 35'. Couple of farm gals heaved that bale about 16' or so. Funniest part was the balloon toss.... started all down main street, couples and young folks and oldsters got a water balloon, and spaced one lane-of-traffic apart, gently tossed the balloon over and back. Then everybody took one big step back, and repeated. Then one more step back and repeater. It was hilarious. [Announcer said previous day some man hauled off and broke his arm tossing.] Wound up everybody was soaked wet, and laughing so hard, and the wining two pairs got all the way to the curbs, and had to re-align down the center of the street and toss WAYYYY down the street. SPLOOSH! Had the sack toss, heaving a sack of straw up and over a bar hoisted up in the air, up and over, with a pitchfork. Then they raised the sack, on pulleys. Winning big old farm boy tossed that thing as high as the top of the two story buildings. Previous night was the tractor parade, I missed that, darn it. Had to leave, before the HUGE vintage car parade and float parade,
Cole Camp, MO., first weekend after Labor Day. Wow.

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
