Take an arc welder. Normally electrons don't jump that distance through the air. Strike an arc, no oxygen present in the cloud of gas and you have high energy state, charges passing from rod to metal.
Getting off topic, Dielectric breakdown in rotor and distributor is a good reason to go with distributor ignition. I will NEVER buy another new vehicle with a distributor, period. Sooner or later they are prone to fail.
