Yo Jim, isn't this a Class A Generator??? One end of the two series fields is already wired internally to ARM (unless a 3 brush then via the third brush and commutator then to ARM post) with the other end terminating at the FLD post, so jumping A to F shorts the field to itself, one end to other end, same voltage on both ends so no field current flow right??? If there's nothing connected to the FLD post its just sitting there an open circuit (again no field current flow) so I don't understand any RPM difference if A is jumped to F OR NOT jumped??????? HELP ME OUT HERE.
I always started the Motor Test by grounding the FLD post so it conducts current from A to ground creating a back EMF which slows the RPM but then if you remove the ground jump it speeds up. Initial spins tells me arm and brushes are okay and then if it speeds up if FLD ground is removed tells me fields are in place and conducting.
