I have a Grasshopper with a 18 horse Kohler with 1000 hours and doing fine, doesn't use a drop of oil between oil changes. I change oil every 25-30 hours. When I mow I warm it up before putting it to work and cool it down well before I shut it down. When I do start mowing I run two thirds throttle, then push it wide open after a round or two. I might be wrong, but throttle position after warmed up doesn't have as much effect on engine life as oil changes and proper warming up and cooling down.
