I have a 2000 1500 with the 5.3 V8, 4x4 regular cab long bed with 265000 on the clock. The good.. Only thing I have had to do was a water pump, still runs great and everything works. The bad.. Rocker panels are gone along with rust bubbles around the rear wheel wells. When I start it after it has sat for while it sounds like the pistons are swapping holes till it warms up a bit. This is a known piston slap issue with the 5.3 but from what I have heard it isn't a big deal and will just keep on going. Haven't seen anything really bad about the 5.3 on any of the Chevy forums and 300000 isn't unusual with a well maintained 5.3.
