That I can remember I have never plowed in mid-July here in northwest Iowa so yesterday was a first. In the middle of August our local threshing show will try to break the Guiness book of records for the most horses plowing at one time. They are shooting for 100 horses. One of the requirements is each plow must plow at least 6" deep, something that might be quite a feat in our black soil so that's where I came in. The nine+acre plot was oats that was rolled up for oat hay this year. Someone from the show called me asking if I could plow it fairly deep now, then they will work it down, seed it to oats and roll it in, hoping to have a short oat crop in looser soil, to plow down with the horses by show time. So yesterday I took the duals off the 4650 Deere, hooked up the 5X18 2500 Deere plow and went to work at it. I plowed 9" deep and that 5X18"s was all the 160+ horse tractor wanted in that black soil. According to GPS I was going 5.2 mph and I wouldn't have wanted to pull the engine any harder, in fact I almost shifted down a few times. The outside temp was 98 but the old girl kept her cool, something I was concerned about at first.
The plowing was being worked down as I finished, someone else showed up with the oat seeder, a couple of hours later it was rolled, and now this morning we got a short .50" rain. It can't get much better than that.
