Refill the def tank each time you change the oil or perform other regular maintenance. On my 2011 Ford I seem to go about 5000 miles before I need to add def and then that is after I receive a notice on my dash display telling me the number of miles before my def tank will be empty. No need to carry a can of def with you unless you are going to be traveling though some desolate area as it is available at most service stations and auto parts stores.
