David has it right. DEF is used to dramatically reduce the NOx emissions coming from a diesel engine. It uses a separate dosing chamber and is unrelated to the diesel particulate filter (DPF). On many engines, DEF led to a REDUCTION in the degree of use of EGR and DPF, but NOT THE ELIMINATION OF IT!
To answer your questions Bob, I'm going on mostly second-hand info for pickups, my own experience is with heavy truck. In most scenarios, you should only have to fill the DEF tank around the same time as your oil changes. You don't need to carry a jug with you, the majority of truck stops, farm supply stores, industrial supply stores, convenience stores, etc. stock jugs of DEF. Your owners manual will tell you what will happen if you run out, but usually, there is a warning for a number of miles, followed by a partial de-rate of the engine, followed by total shutdown. I know on my Western Star, it gave ample time after the first warning for me to find DEF somewhere.
I hope that clears a few things up. I still highly recommend that you read your owners manual, especially regarding the DEF and DPF systems. It will give you the best information specific to your Duramax.

Flax provided the fibre which w
