an old gent that lived near us had retired farming and his barn was starting to get infested. He put out a couple live traps. When he had caught a rat he would take a little torch and LIGHTLY scorch the rat and turned it loose. His story was that rats cant stand the smell of the singed rat and all will run away as he nears them where ever he goes. Sounds loopy but worked for him and me after all these years since.
