I think at some point Ford would have no longer had a patent to exclude other builders. It used to be that patents were issued for a maximum of seven years and a renewal process to go through after that. It's not automatic that the US Patent Office renews a patent. I think if Deere really wanted to they could have pushed Ford-Ferguson on the rockshaft portion of the three point hitch design and I do not know just how unique the parallel linkage aspect was or was not. If think Case had no issue coming out with its Eagle hitch system despite the similarities to the Ferguson hitch. Back to Deere I wonder how much they valued the three point hitch system when it first came out as they experimented with a torque amplifier type hi-low then did nothing as far as putting that into production.
