A 45 mile one-way commute is about 20,000 to 22,000 miles a year. If your climate only gets ice and snow from mid-November to the end of March that's only 4 1/2 months. The paved roads are likely to still be in good condition during much of the winter.
I would agree with using a mid-size or full-size front wheel drive car most of the year and only drive the AWD or 4x4 when the roads are poor. The operating cost of a FWD car would save 1/4 to 1/2 over the cost of an AWD or 4x4 SUV.
