: Jeff,

: I bought the tractor in late June and I've worked on it every spare hour since then. Although, I bought the tractor/loader/backhoe for only $450, it's been a money pit since then. I didn't realize at the time the tractor parts were so rare and expesive. Knowing then what I know now, I probably would have bought a more popular 35 -40 HP utility tractor for the core tractor and mounted the loader and backhoe on it. The loader and backhoe are in good shape and only have to replace 1 of the outrigger stabilizers which I've already located in a salvage yard. So far I've put in another $1025 in brakes, sheetmetal, power steering pump, gas tank, engine rebuild, carburetor, water pump, etc. I know I'm going to have to put in another $1500 - $2000 for 4 tires (2 rear & 2 front which are vintage 1959) , gauges, radiator, outrigger, paint, seat, decals, etc. Plus I may have to replace the Case-O-Matic with a standard dry clutch arrangement which may be another $500 - $1000.

Will the backhoe be worth the 5 grand you'll have in it when coumpleted. You'll have rebuilt the whole thing. The motor runs good, loader and hoe work. If the tiers hold air I put the on the last rung of the ladder. You've gone this far. I'd say put in the dry cluch. In the end you'll have a good machine. I've seen old hunks of rust and weld leakin from every where go for 5 grand. Think about it.

Today's Featured Article - New Hitches For Your Old Tractor - by Chris Pratt. For this article, we are going to make the irrational and unlikely assumption that you purchased an older tractor that is in tip top shape and needs no immediate repairs other than an oil change and a good bath. To the newcomer planning to restore the machine, this means you have everything you need for the moment (something to sit in the shop and just look at for awhile while you read the books). To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the ...
