Talk to a local lawyer first , but around here the company places an ad in the local news paper that items A,B, & C will be auctioned off it charges are not paid in full by X date .
I would say if you have had no contact in over a year it is fair . I would also advise people to get some customer info , description of work , etc in writing , not that I always do . Of course when I get through with a job and someone owes me money they get as many phone calls as needed until we set up a date to pick up the work and I get paid .
